Interesting to see that few people have mentioned the usual mass-market rubbish beers whose names so often appear when this question is asked.

The problem with naming beers is that there are just so many - over 4000 in the UK alone. But my favourite bottled beer is still Fuller's 1845 and my favourite draught beer is Dark Star Green-Hopped IPA (but all Dark Star beers are superb).

Sadly, some of the once great beers others have mentioned here, Boddingtons for example, are but a shadow of their former selves.

And the most I've ever paid? That was probably for some Belgian beer in Dubai - around about £8 for a bottle. But, hey, was I glad to be able to get a decent drink.

Surely it depends on where you live, everyone likes there own local beers. Personally I am from Lancashire in the North West England and you wont get better beer than something from allgates or thwaites, however I imagine if your from Southern England you would say a beer from Adnams is the best or another southern brewery. My personal favourite of all times has to be Allgates Pretoria. And the most expensive beer I have bought is in a bar in London where he was selling a beer in a 2/3 of a pint for £4, or £6 a pint !

Mitchells, Thwaites, Yates & Jackson, Hartleys, Brains SA, Wadworth XXX.

Most expensive was a specialist beer in a micro-brewery in Belgium (one of the few places outside the UK to brew hop-based beer rather than grain-based lagers). Can't remember the brew or the price, but it was mucho expensive.

Amtel and Wadworths 6X (they brew it in my home town of Devizes, Wiltshire) is the nicest beer I have ever tasted, the most I paid for was for a pint of Peroni (which is also a really nice beer) for £4.80 in Bath, Somerset.

All-time favorite: La Petite, house beer at Orval. Pure nectar.

Favorite American beer: Turbo Dog, flagship beer at Abita Springs.

Of my own brew: Fornicator, a double bock.

Alas, neither commercial one is readily available.
