Check out www.pipes.org there are links on doctors reports on pipe smoking. I would urge you dad to start smoking a pipe though. Herfnerd and adike o also gave correct information.

Both cigars and pipes are much better as you do not inhale them, however they are not alternatives to cigarettes. The former are smoked for flavor and aroma while the latter is a nicotine delivery system.

Apollo gave totally incorrect information. Cigars as a whole are actually much 'purer', relatively speaking - and we are talking premium handrolled cigars.. Pipe tobacco is generally cased and no one is sure about the additives.

As long as you're smoking natural tobacco, it doesn't matter if it's pipe tobacco or cigar tobacco. The additional problems with cigarettes are caused by a) the rat poison, lye, etc, that's added to them for "flavor," b) the fact that you inhale cigarettes, and c) the fact that they're packaged to make it easy to smoke them frequently throughout the day.

Neither pipes or cigars have rat poison in the tobacco, you ordinarily don't inhale either, and neither of them are the type of thing you take outside for a 5 minute smoke break.

Smoking decent cigars gets to be an expensive habit, though. Pipe tobacco is much cheaper for the quality tobacco.

I would have to say pipes. Granted no tobacco use is healthy, pipes would cause you to inhale fewer carcinogens. Also, pipe tobacco is much purer than cigar tobacco.

Speaking from experience, dip/chew/smokeless tobacco would be a better alternative than all 3. Have him try some Copenhagen Long Cut or Redman Chew. Those two are the purest smokeless tobaccos on the market.

Yes, I smoke a pipe. With good pipe tobacco. I will fire up the occasional premium cigar as well.

They're all bad.

Cigars are worse than cigarettes.

Pipes are probably better [but they still give you miuth cancer]

Both still involve putting tobacco smoke in your lungs, so neither is really a better alternative. Pipe and cigar smokers generally don't deeply inhale as much of the smoke, but that doesn't do much good for a cigarette smoker who's looking to switch.

Not so good as it is one evil Vs another. Lung Vs mouth cancers.

Not much good news for your argument that cigars and pipe smoking is safer than cigarettes but they probably are slightly safer.
