I used to have a pub ( tied house ) take my advice , stay well away from the publican trade , the only people who make money are the brewers , the pub chain , the accountants . Pubs these days are ( no pun intended ) a mugs game . Getting an `On Licence ` is the easy part, though this will cost you around £200 for a days course and test , fail , it will cost the same at next attempt .

A good `Free House ` ( one that makes money ) will cost in excess of £ 400,000 .

Tied House , from £25,000 upwards , you will be responsible , for maintenance and repairs , money from your profits ( Cellar Cooler goes Kaput = £ 5,- 6, 000 ) When you enter house , you will pay for fixtures /fittings , glassware . Should the boiler go bust £ 7,-8,000 , these are your responsibility .You can also expect an annual rent increase , business rates , you will be required to live on the premises ,so as well as business rates , you will pay council tax for your living quarters . A `wheelie bin` for the pub refuse will cost in excess of £ 300 per annum . Running costs , Gas, Electric, Staff wages , breakages , come out of your profits . For music you will need an `Entertainment Licence ` (£ 1,000)

Take my advice stay well away , the hours are long , lines to clean, bottling up , cleaning the pub , all before you open , cashing up at nights , keeping the books , paying for an accountant cleaning up people`s vomit , urine , excreta .It is not just selling alcohol

In order to run a pub/bar/off licence..any establishment that retails alcohol. you need to have "A Personal Licence" to get one of those, you need to pass the examination which gets you a "National Licencees Certificate" and a Police Background Check. These are the only pre-requesits, but you would be advised to get some knowledge of Beers Wines and Spirits, particularly with "Real Ale" A cellar management qualification, and a plethora of Health and Safety instructions on the use of cellar gasses, , a Basic Hygiene Certificate wouldn`t go amiss either. That and a couple or three hundred thousand quid to buy the pub in the first place !!

If you have a qualifiction in business studies I suggest you do a little homework regarding pub ownership.

Since the smoking ban and cheap supermarket booze pubs are closing down at an incredible rate.

Lots of people dream of running a pub. Leaning on the bar, talking to your nice local customers. When they get their own pub the reality is very different.

No you don't need college to own your own bar.Or any business for that matter. You just need the money and licences to open one.

Edit: It would help a lot if you did work in one for a while that way you would get the idea of what to do.

If you want to be successful, go to college and study business, marketing, and accounting. It's not as simple as it might seem. Pouring drinks is easy; making a profit is a killer.
