As far as pale lagers go, Heineken is a step above budweiser, miller and coors.
As far as beers in general go, Heineken is really bad. The reason is simple, the style sucks. No matter what you do, a pale lager is going to be uninteresting with very light flavors, a light color, almost no hop presence, and an unappealing aroma. I can't even think about drinking one, personally.
If you're interested in Heineken, I would suggest you try to find better examples of the style that Heineken meant to be. See, nobody trys to make a pale lager on purpose, it's a sort of marketing accident. What they really wanted to produce was a Pilsner (either Czech or German, they are technically two "different" styles). So, with this in mind, you should seek out Pilsner Urquell (unsurprisingly the Pilsner that everyone wanted to copy so badly), Czechvar (also known as Budweiser Budvar, also from Czech), BitBurger (German Pilsner), or probably the most flavorful Pilsner, the Victory PrimaPils (made in Pennsylvania).
