Reversatol is your key ingredient that makes red wine such a choice..

"

Resveratrol is a phytoalexin produced naturally by several plants when under attack by bacteria or fungi. Phytoalexins are antibacterial and anti-fungal chemicals produced by plants as a defense against infection by pathogens. Resveratrol has also been produced by chemical synthesis,[1] and is sold as a nutritional supplement. A number of beneficial health effects, such as anti-cancer, antiviral, neuroprotective, anti-aging, anti-inflammatory and life-prolonging effects have been reported, although some of these studies used animal subjects (e.g. rats). Resveratrol is found in the skin of red grapes and is a constituent of red wine but, based on extrapolation from animal trials, apparently not in sufficient amounts to explain the “French paradox” that the incidence of coronary heart disease is relatively low in southern France despite high dietary intake of saturated fats.[2]

Konrad T. Howitz and Robert Zipkin of BIOMOL International discovered that resveratrol increases the activity of an enzyme called SIRT1. They then contacted David Sinclair of the Harvard Medical School, and cofounder of Sirtris Pharmaceuticals,[3] in order to initiate a collaboration. Sinclair found that resveratrol significantly increases the lifespan of yeast and mice. There is hope that it could do the same for humans.[4]"

Yes, the more chemical additives or sulfates the less benefits wine has. All wine has some added sulfates, but the cheaper brands have the most. I think your best bet is to buy local wine. If you go to your local winery, they will usually be very knowledgeable on which brands have the least sulfates and chemical processing.

I think Cabernet Sauviguon is one of the better ones. I just heard recently that a wine that Trader Joe's offers was chosen as the best. What surprised me was that it was only 99 cents! I also heard recently that alcohol *in moderate amounts* can be beneficial for the system.

wine if fine....but grape juice does the same thing without getting you drunk or damaging ur liver
2007-10-27 10:15:54 UTC
technically wine doesn't help you live longer. just b/c red wines have anti-oxidants doesn't mean you should drink a bottle a day. longevity is based on overall health. which means eat right, exercise, doctor visits, etc.
2007-10-27 21:00:37 UTC
the antioxidants in red wine mainly come from the crushed grape seeds. best way is to make your own wine.

Also, to get the same benefit of drinking wine, eat the skin and seeds whenever you eat grapes, even though they won't be completely absorbed, it will still make a big difference.

If you want to prolong life and live healthily, i suggest some foods (in order of significance) :

1) tomatoes (lycopene slows down ageing and prevents cancer)

2) garlic (100x more antioxidative activity than vit E)

3) green tea (currently the best health drink)

4) change your oil to cold pressed olive oil

5) blueberries (very high antioxidant content)

6) walnuts

7) oily fish (omega-3 for young skin, and prevents dementia)

8) lots of water + a bit of sunlight everyday (for good skin, joints and bones, provided you wear sunscreen)

9) antioxidant supplements

10) mineral supplements (calcium, selenium, zinc and iron)

Finally, decrease your caloric intake altogether, high food intake = high metabolism = high oxidative stress on the body = lots more DNA damage

Stay lean, muscly and a little hungry is the way to 120!

dont know, how about asking your liver???? How long can you live without a liver? Or have you not considered the genetics and damage alcohol does to such suseptible persons? Or is it maybe you simply have a problem with ANY alcohol and are simply rationalizing your continued abuse with wine.........give it some thought.....

In a study of hundreds of wines from around the globe, Cornell researcher Leroy Creasy found the highest resveratrol levels in pinot noir grapes grown in cooler, rainy places like the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York and Oregon's Willamette Valley. (In fact, the highest resveratrol content found in a wine was in Vinifera's Fleur de Pinot Noir, with four times as much as the nearest California pinot noir tested; chart). Long sown in France's cool Burgundy region, pinot noir is considered a finicky grape to grow, in part because it is susceptible to rot, which may be the reason it produces more resveratrol than other grapes--up to 40 times as much resveratrol as grapes such as merlot and cabernet sauvignon.

Castilla Leon region in Spain: Which includes Ribera del Duero, Toro, Zamora, etc.

This wine from Castilla Leon is the best in the world for my taste. I tasted some of the best wines from Italy, France and California and you cannot compare.

The Wine from Castilla Leon is dark burgundy red, light does NOT transmit THROUGH this wine in your glass. Even if you hold your glass against the light.

Try Astrales 2004, Mauro 2004 or San Remo 2003 to name a few. These wines a priced at about $40 and up, depends where you buy them, in Spain they are like 25 Euros. They are pricey but the way they taste they should cost a lot more. Astrales 2004 is one of my favorites. This wine is so fruity and thick and packed with antioxidants.

Just try one and compare and you will cry at the taste.

hmm.. only moderation will increase your lifespan. The benefits of red wine are that the grapes used to make it contain some antioxidants and a small amount of alcohol has been shown to actually be beneficial towards relieving stress on your heart and body, but it should be noticed that too much has the opposite effect.

However you could get the same antioxidants from fruit and it would probably be more beneficial for you because it would have more nutrients your body needs. Try making a smoothie once a day with a banana and blueberries or strawberries thrown in without added sugar. If you want you could even put a small amount of alcohol in with the smoothie that would be better for you than wine or better yet skip the alcohol.

Too much alcohol is quite bad for you so the more you drink the more it is actually going to decrease your odds at a longer lifespan. Stick to no more than 1 glass a day.

I don't know which wine, but I DO know that pomegranate juice bought our local Braum's store has something like 3 times more the amount of antioxidants in it than red wine. The info is posted on their wall showing it in comparison to wine and other known antioxidants. I can drink it and not worry about getting canned at work!!

Red wine brings the most benefits to the table. I have been drinking red wine for over 15 years and find that spending a few bucks more for good wine is well worth it....you don't skip on vitamins so why skip on good wine....you buy a nice car so why not good wine...etc...

Also if you just starting to drink wine try the Mcmanis Family Wines these are $10ish or so and drink very nice and they have many varietals to get a broad scope with little money out of your pocket!

If you are looking for Antioxidant effects almost any red wine will do, but it is better if it is organic. Also know that if you consume more than 1-2 glasses per day, you lose the beneficial effects, and you actually shorten you lifespan. Furthermore, you can get better results from pomegranate juice, but it's just not as fun or social to drink.

Despite what so-called doctors are saying, two or three glasses of red wine is excellent for one's health. You can also gain the same antioxidant promotion from grapeseed, fish oil, blueberry and milk thistle combo. Otherwise, if you are an alcoholic, do the same combo and live life to the fullest (with a buzz!)

I love wine and last year we visited Cornell Univeristy and went to Goose watch winery in finger lakes NY, bought the wines we tasted and find out to be excellent. They even have their own hybrid of grapes researched in Cornell university. The best thing is they have less sulphide and do not give me any hangover in the morning.

I cannot believe finger lake region wine are not well promoted in whole of US and the world. California wine are more popular here.

I feel lucky to have discovered them and now we order online at the goose watch winery. We did not have time to visit other wineries in that region , they may be the same as well.

For french , longetivity in life and association with wine, I think their diet and lifestyle play a big part. Americans are eating too much processed food and too much stressed or living a sedentary lifestyle.

For myself I am trying not to become a wine alcoholic and limiting myself to drink finger lake wine only.

I don't believe any wine can prolong human life. Every individual has different levels of metabolism which, in conjunction with foods or liquids that contain antioxidants, can or will not prolong their life. My grandmother lived to be 102 years old, never touched wine or any alcoholic beverages. My grandfather enjoyed his Chianti on a regular basis and died at 78 years of age. As a side note: neither ever smoked.

Red wine gets most of the hype but it has been shown that any alcohol may also have benefits. However the complication with using alcoholic beverages to improve your health is to be aware of the potential dangers of too much alcohol and binge drinking and the possibility for abuse. Also one needs to know what a "serving" is. 1.5 oz of hard liquor or 5 oz of wine contain the same amount of alcohol and each is considered one serving. Measure it to see how small these servings really are. Many bars and restaurants "pour" wine by the glass way larger than 5 oz. An example: Applebee's actually used to advertise the size of their wine-by-the-glass and it was way more than 5 oz.

Also, if a health claim is made that consuming one serving of an alcoholic beverage each day may have benefits, it doesn't mean save them up for Sat. night.

And I'll add that one may reap similar and additional antioxidant benefits from grapes or grape juice or other fruit.

I don't think the brand matters. If you're determined to drink a glass or wine every day, just make it something you like the taste of.

It depends on your tastes. All wine in moderation are healthy. I prefer a good full bodied Red. Chianti from Italy, a good Burgundy or Bordeaux from France but Chile, Australia, and New Zealand have some very fine wines as does Spain. My Son brought me back some wine from Brazil last December that was very good. Find a wine you like. and don't be afraid to try many different ones.

The best type of wine for prolonging lifespan is "NOT DRINKING". Wine for health is pure marketing, why not to eat dark grapes instead of drinking wine? The benefits are the same and no additives and no chemicals as in the wine. As a marathoner who had hard training programs, more than 18 miles a day, lift weighting and stretching, I can assure that the best for our health and performance is not drinking alcohol. All those benefits around drinking wine is only another way to fool the consumers and make lots of money. Longevity comes by exercising regularly, eating healthy foods, lots of fruits and water, avoiding fries and sugar, not by drinking wine.

If you want the benefits of wine, without the non-benefits of other ingredients like possible contaminants and alcohol, you can try grape seed extract supplements.

Of course, it depends on whether you are getting wine for the benefits or for its enjoyment.

Getting the supplement would be purely for its benefits as I doubt it goes well with anything =p

Do note however, the healthy effects have been found mostly in RED wine. Not that there aren't any in white, I think the studies show that there are plainly more in red. Either that or not much study's been made on whtie wine and their benefits.

LOL Funny question, but I'll try.

The best wine is the wine you enjoy!

Red may have more anti-oxidents, but I personally can't drink red cuz I get headaches, so what is the point of me drinking it and having to suffer? .... it isn't doing me a bit of good then.....on the other hand, if I enjoy a nice crisp white, and it relaxes me, then by being relaxed I may not be extending my lifespan, but I am enjoying the life I have....and that is good....so you see, it's a funny question!

Those looking for something that isn't white and dry are advised to check out Rosa Regale Brachetto d'Acqui 2000. It's a deep cranberry colored wine that has a hefty starwberry nose and luscious fruit flavors. With chocolate this is a wine to die for ($23; Rating ***3/4). This is my absolute favorite!!!! Its a sparkling wine that goes down real smooth!

In theory, younger, red wines with more tannin would be more beneficial, as older wines tend to become clearer with time, and the tannin winds up as sediment in really old bottles. Just drink a modestly priced young table wine on a daily basis and you should be fine. Just don't eat junk food as well, otherwise there isn't much point.
2007-10-28 10:12:13 UTC
The brand names aren't very important. As far as I know, red wine is the only variety of wine that has any known significant health benefits. A higher-quality wine is probably a bit healther than the crappy stuff, but again I don't think it matters very much.
2007-10-27 13:19:57 UTC
Skip the scientific bias data, the only wine that will prolong your lifespan is the one that your and I mean YOUR taste buds enjoy. By having a wine that YOU pick and love rather than some wine snob, will make you happy and thus prolonging your lifespan. Enjoy!

The best thing you can do to increase your life span is not drink any alcohol and just eat the grapes. To increase your life scan you need to eat proper diet. That means don't eat any food with cholesterol and saturated fat. Drinking red wine is like putting a bandaid on what is killing you but not correcting the cause of what is killing you.

Red wines are your best choices. A Merlot is your better choice. As for brands, stay away from the cheap stuff. Don't do MD 2020, or Gypsy Rose. LOL A decent red wine will start around $7.00. And you want to take a 4oz glass of wine per day.

You should consider making your own. My wife and I make our own. We love the Merlot. Its a little expensive to start off with, but after several batches you'll see the cost effectiveness of it. What would cost you $10.00 at the store will run you around $2.00 home made and its the best.

Red wine because it has resveratrol, which is found in the skin and seeds of grapes used to make wine, and is found to help the heart, also it increases High Density Lipoproteins which are good cholesterol and lowers the blood pressure which relaxes the heart, and helps prevent blood clots.

None-alcoholic version. Fresh grape juice. The benefit you get from antioxidants is negated by alcohol in the fermented grape juice

But something tells me that wineries are promoting the antioxidant properties of fermented red grape juice so they can keep and get more people hooked on the habit forming and deadly alcohol.

The best wines for reducing the chances of hear disease are the ones that are high in polyphenols. I think that all red wines contain these however they are seen in higher concentrations from wines that are either from a high altitude or wines that are made in a traditional way (the seeds, grape and stalk are soaked in the crushed grape juice thus giving a higher level).
2007-10-27 07:23:10 UTC
The redder the wine, the better. It is the strong color that is indicative on antioxidants(whether it be in wine, vegetables, or fruit).Red wine over white, red(or purple) cabbage over white, red grape juice over white.

As for differences between the colors for antioxidants like in peppers be they red, green, yellow, orange...there is no difference to the antioxidants that they all contain.

[[Mind you, too much wine will shorten your life especially when you get behind the wheel.]]

1. the one that has less alcohol % by volume (because alcohol is not good for your liver and it kills brain cell)

2. contains no sulfates (some people are allergic)

3. organic (preferably)or the ones that are grown in excellent air quality regions

4. any red, cab, burg blends are better for the heart (but may stain your teeth, so then you will start using some mouth rinses that may contain harmful ingredients)

p.s. it's a no win situation so have a glass and forget your problems for an hour!

Red wine or, if you don't want the alcohol, try pomegranate juice (I like Pom brand - INTENSE). For some reason the French seem to have the best statistics, but any non-jug dry red wine should do (US, Italy, Chile, Argentina, Australia, South Africa, Greece, etc.) of good colour should work (Pom is just as expensive, and stains just as badly, but (I think) might actually be better).

there is NO alcohol that makes life longer. this is a myth. the best it MAY do for you, is mellow you out emotionally, thin out your blood a small bit, and maybe lower blood pressure temporarily.

other than that, alcohol causes the liver to work over time and shortens the efficiency of it.

NO booze os GOOD for you long term.

Any red wines where the grape is grown in colder climates (eg. Peru). It's the thick skins that provide the best protection for the grape and the best value for you in the wine. However, over a 5 oz. glass (for women) and two 5 oz. glasses(for men) reverses any health benefits.

Just so you know, it's not the resveratrol of red wine that is the prime "health chemical" in wine; you need about 1000L of red wine to get enough resveratrol to have it really make a difference.

It's procyanidins. Wines from south-west France and Sardinia seem to have more procyanidins than other locations.

You cannot drink enough wine to get the amount of Resveratrol that you should have without getting highly intoxicated........Buy the Resveratrol if you are really concerned about the health benefits that come from the grape. No amount of alchohol is going to guarentee anyone a longer life-span..........As far as good health there is more to it than even Resveratrol..............The fountain of youth is still unfound...............................For Resveratrol: Andrew Lessman makes a very high quality product........Go to Andrew Lessman.com

All alcohol damages your health!

If you are looking for antioxidants eat berries and other fruit that has the same benefits.

To say that wine has a long term health benefits because of anti-oxidents is misleading and it gives those who drink wine an excuse to drink more.

Drink fresh clean cool water. If you want to be posh have aqua vita, its as good. Eat grapes on their own.

WINE IS VERY BAD FOR YOU!! READ THIS article among many---

"Same amount of methanol (source of formaldehyde, formic acid) from aspartame as from dark wines and liquors: Utz: "

Murray 2004.10.19 rmforall

Rich Murray rmforall at att.net

Tue Oct 19 12:45:48 EST 2004

Aspartame -- Sweet Or Sour? Thea Jourdan,

The London Daily Mail 2004.10.04:

Murray 2004.10.18 rmforall

[ Comments by Rich Murray are in square brackets. I have added spacing for

increased readability and added emphasis, without changing text.

This UK newspaper article is unusual for its clarity and specifics about the

open secret that the 11% methanol component of aspartame, the same level

provided by diet sodas and by dark wines and liquors ( agreed by experts to

be the major cause of "morning after" hangovers ) is converted by the body

largely into formaldehyde and then largely into formic acid, both potent,

cumulative toxins that affect every cell and tissue.

Hundreds of case reports suggest that most aspartame reactors have been

using over 2 liters, about 6 12-oz cans diet soda, daily for years, while

three controlled experiments in 1988, 1993, and 1994 by non-industry funded

teams found that a quarter to a half of vulnerable people using 6 to 12 cans

daily for 1 to 4 weeks had symptoms, especially headaches. ( summarized at

the end of this post )

I conjecture that the author was required to recommend aspartame at the end,

but, all the same, she certainly "got her licks in". ]

Food e-News Edition 205: 06 - 13 October 2004

**Aspartame -- sweet or sour?

Thea Jourdan, writing for the Daily Mail (12/10/04), examines the pros and

cons of aspartame.

On the positive side she lists beating obesity, helping diabetics and

improving dental health in children.

On the negative side, she points out that many reputable scientists are

concerned by the fact that aspartame can break down into methanol, formic

acid and formaldehyde, all of which can have toxic effects.

She also claims that numerous studies have associated aspartame with

headache and migraine, and that nine [ actually 3 ] cases of seizures were

reported in the medical journal The Lancet.

See also Food e-News Edition 204 06/10/04).

**************************************************************

2004.10.19 Hi Jeff, Thanks for the sensible questions.

The long-standing coverup about methanol in dark wines and liquors has

continued for three decades as a very similar "conspiracy of silence" about

methanol from aspartame products.

It is urgent to warn the world public, and to mandate removal of all

methanol, formaldehyde, and formic acid sources.

Same applies: drink a bottle of wine every day and you won't care if you live to be 100.

Researchers have confirmed and extended the possible benefits of the substance, resveratrol (component in red wines), and offer new insight into how it works -- apparently by revving up the metabolism to make muscles burn more energy and work more efficiently.

Resveratrol is found in red wine, grapes and other foods, including peanuts. Scientists suspect it may help explain why French people have fewer heart attacks despite their high-fat diets, and why eating a very low-calorie diet can extend the life spans of many species.

Any kind of wine made from red grapes. In fact, the wine itself does not matter at all. It's the grapes that are good for your health, and you can just as well get the same benefit from drinking natural grape juice.

Edit (10/27/2007): Thanks Chris (second reply below mine). I couldn't remember the name of the chemical: Resverasatrol. Red grape juice has that ingredient too.
