Damnation: In the great beer producing country of Belgium, some brewers have made it a tradition to give their beers an unusual name. Sometimes the name is curious, now and then it is diabolical and other times it is just plain silly. Damnation is our brewmaster's interpretation of a Belgian style Strong Golden Ale. It has extraordinary aromas of banana and pear with mouth filling flavors of sweet malt and earthy hops. The lingering finish is dry and slightly bitter but very, very smooth.

The first {0nly?} estate beer. AWESOME!

Chico Estate Harvest Ale, Sierra Nevada Brewing

We wanted to see if we could grow hops at our brewery in Chico, California so we planted our own hop field selecting our prized Cascade and Centennial varieties along with some specialty hop varieties to experiment with. To our surprise, we not only could grow hops, we were also able to harvest them in late summer due to Chico’s ideal climate.

According to Zymurgy Magazine (a publication from the American Homebrewers Association) Pliney the Elder, an Imperial IPA from Russian River Brewing out of Santa Rosa, CA took the number 1 spot for best beer in America. It beat the reigning champ for a few years running, which was 90 Minute IPA by DogFish Head Brewing out of Delaware. Both are excellent beers in my opinion, and the opinion of many others I would imagine as well.

Of the main advertised beers? Budweiser products beat out Miller and Coor's any day. Not that that is saying much.

Being from Texas, my favorite beer is Shiner (any variety except the abomination that is Shiner Smokehaus).

I also enjoy Boulevard beers from Kansas City and the Alaskan Brewing company beers commonly found in the Pacific Northwest.

Did I miss something? When did Blue Moon become Canadian?

Technically Blue Moon is American brewed and owned by SABMiller an (correct me if I am wrong) English company. It was first brewed by Coors (USA) then by the American owned Molson-Coors (still USA) and finally SABMiller of England. But this Engliah owned beer is still brewed in the USA or is it brewed in Canada now?.

It must be a Cali beer.

Temptation: "Aged in French oak wine barrels for twelve months with distinct characteristics of fruit and subtle oak" sounds more like a description of wine than beer. However, Temptation is indeed beer. Temptation is a Blonde Ale aged in French oak chardonnay barrels with Brettanomyces. Flavors of wine and oak absorb into the brew throughout its aging. Temptation is re-fermented in the bottle to create its carbonation--a process commonly used to make fine champagne and sparkling wine. Spent yeast forms a thin layer of sediment to remain in the bottle.
